Message from the Chairman, President and CEO

Welcome. This section of our website is devoted to Corporate Responsibility. We recognize the powerful relationship between our company and the people and communities around the world who are touched by our work. We believe that the full array of our activities should strengthen this relationship, and that our success as a company depends on an unwavering commitment to corporate responsibility.

Lilly has embraced a bold vision. We intend to make a significant contribution to humanity by improving global health in the 21st century. Starting with the work of our scientists, we will place improved outcomes for individual patients at the center of what we do. We will listen carefully to understand patient needs and work with health care partners to provide meaningful benefits for the people who depend on us.

To carry out this vision, we must anchor our efforts in the company's longstanding values of integrity, excellence, and respect for people. This means not only complying with the laws and regulations that govern our work, but also moving beyond compliance and operating our business to the highest standards.

Lilly believes transparency is critical to helping our industry rebuild trust. Over the years, we have made public our clinical trials data and our grants. And in 2009, we began disclosing payments to doctors for any speaking or consulting services they provide our company.

To fully realize our vision, we know that our work must extend beyond our operations, and we are striving to align our corporate responsibility initiatives with our vision. We are focusing philanthropic and other related investments on promoting sustainable access to health care for underserved populations and working collaboratively with partners to achieve measurable results. As we continue to fight multi-drug resistant strains of tuberculosis, we will also step up our investments in the fight against diabetes-an insidious and expensive disease that is affecting more and more people in both developed and developing countries.

There is much work to do. But we are inspired and energized by our company's legacy of philanthropic leadership, and our employees' dedication to volunteerism and community service. Lilly is consistently ranked among the nation's most charitable companies, and we have been singled out by Fortune and BusinessWeek magazines, as well as groups such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, for our spirit of giving. Recently, we were honored to receive the United Way's highest corporate recognition, the Spirit of America Award, and the Points of Light Foundation Corporate Engagement Award for Excellence.

Our company's commitment to improve human health in the 21st century is an ambitious one. With my 40,000 Lilly colleagues around the world, I am excited by the enormous opportunities ahead of us-opportunities to make a profound and positive difference for the patients and communities we are privileged to serve. We invite you to explore this section of our website to learn more about how we live out our corporate responsibility in the way we operate our business and work to address global health challenges.
